9-Vehicle Pileup On I-94 Sends 11 To Hospital

JACKSON, Mich. (AP/WWJ) - Authorities say a nine-vehicle pileup on Interstate 94 in southern Michigan sent 11 people to a hospital with injuries.

The crash happened on at around 9:30 a.m. Friday in the Jackson area on the eastbound side of the freeway — between exits 139 and 141 on eastbound I-94 — closing all lanes in that direction and slowing traffic on the westbound side.

Three of the vehicles involved were semitrailers, including one that jackknifed.

Blackman-Leoni public safety Deputy Director Jon Johnston tells the Jackson Citizen Patriot that two people had to be extricated from vehicles using the Jaws of Life.

An estimated 200 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the roadway.

Jackson Community Ambulance spokeswoman Joyce Williams said 11 people were taken to Allegiance Health after the crash, but the extent of their injuries was not immediately known.

At 2 p.m, one lane of eastbound traffic remained closed and was expected to stay closed for several hours.

The cause of the initial crash remains under investigation, with Michigan State Police assisting local authorities.
