52 Kilos Of Cocaine Seized At Ambassador Bridge
DETROIT (WWJ) - A 26-year-old Canadian man was arrested at the Ambassador Bridge after allegedly trying to smuggle 52 kilograms of cocaine from Detroit into Windsor.
Officials say Lavdrim Mehmeti, of Scarborough, Ontario, was arrested while trying to cross the border on Monday.
According to the Canada Border Services Agency, Mehmeti's commercial truck and trailer was referred for a secondary inspection on the Canadian side of the bridge. During their search, officers discovered 52 bricks of suspected cocaine inside three duffel bags and a tote located in storage areas of the truck.
At that point, officers seized the suspected cocaine and arrested Mehmeti on charges of importing cocaine and possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
"This seizure was outstanding work by all involved and demonstrates that CBSA officers are vigilant in protecting our borders 24 hours a day/seven days a week," Rick Comerford, Regional Director General of CBSA, said in a statement. "Our officers work hard to combat illegal activity at our borders and are dedicated to keeping our streets and communities safe."
Mehmeti is currently in custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Windsor on August 4.
