5 People Injured When Shots Ring Out In Southwest Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - Police say five people were wounded when bullets started flying in southwest Detroit overnight.

The incident happened around 11:50 p.m. Monday at Annabelle and Gleason streets, in a neighborhood near Fort Street and West Outer Drive.

A group of people were apparently congregating near cars in the intersection when shots rang out. Other circumstances weren't immediately clear.

Police say five people received gunshot wounds and were taken to nearby hospitals. A 19-year-old woman who was shot in the back is in serious condition. A 20-year-old man who was shot in the hand, a 21-year-old man who was shot in the elbow, a 22-year-old woman who was shot in the hip and a 18-year-old woman with a graze wound over her right eye, are all in stable condition.

Police found out about the shooting nearly an hour later when hospital authorities called to say that doctors were treating several patients for gunshot wounds.

Police are investigating the incident as a drive-by shooting and are looking for a white mini van that apparently sped away from the scene.

Norman Nichols, who lives just a street over from where the shooting took place, said the neighborhood is generally quiet.

"I woke up and I heard this and I'm going like 'There ain't that many houses left on Annabelle in this one block,' you know," Nichols told WWJ's Mike Campbell.

His wife, Barbara, said the neighborhood has been changing lately, with many younger couples moving in, but she doesn't feel the urgency to move.

"It's kind of scary, so close to home, but I've been out here 35 years and we've never had any problems," she said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police at 313-267-4600.
