3 Facing Attempted Murder Charges In Shooting Of 2-Year-Old Girl

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Three men are facing charges connected to the shooting of two-year-old Makanzee Oldham on Detroit's east side earlier this week.

Cleveland Smelley, Antoine Smelley and Deonta Bennett are all facing attempted murder charges.

Smelley allegedly got into an argument with the girl's father, according to investigators, at around 7:40 p.m. Wednesday outside of a home on Fairmount Dr., in a neighborhood along Kelly Rd. just south of Eight Mile Rd.

The father and daughter were sitting in a car when Smelley took out a gun and fired one shot, according to police. The bullet missed the man he was arguing with, but hit the little girl in the head.

Prosecutor Kym Worthy says the shooting happened after Antoine Smelley poured juice over the head of a woman who was getting ready for prom.

Police told WWJ Newsradio 950 Thursday morning Oldham had died, but during a news conference later in the day Assistant Chief Steve Dolunt said that she was "in grave condition," but still alive after being shot in the head.

The suspects will face a judge on Saturday.
