3 Face Charges In Easter Sunday Fatal Shooting Of 3-Year-Old Detroit Girl At Home

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Three men are facing murder charges in the fatal shooting of a 3-year-old girl inside a Detroit home on Easter Sunday morning.

According to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, a one-person grand jury indicted 24-year-old Paul G. Kendall of Ecorse, 19-year-old Reginald L. Street of Detroit and 30-year-old Jonathan L. Burks of Detroit.

They also face charges including assault and home invasion.

The indictment was unsealed Monday.

Anaiya Denise Montgomery was shot at around 2 a.m. on March 27 after police said pair of gunmen forced their way into home, on Riverview Ave. near McNichols and Telegraph roads. The opened fire, reloaded and then fired again, police said.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner said Anaiya died of multiple gunshot wounds. Two men inside the home, described as the girls' family members, were also wounded.

Police and prosecutors have not yet disclosed a possible motive for the shooting.

Street's lawyer Nicole James said Monday she was awaiting information on the case and had no comment. The Associated Press left messages seeking comment from lawyers for Kendall and Burks.

A trial for the three men is set to begin in late July.

A 2014 Detroit News investigation found nearly 500 Detroit children have died in homicides since the year 2000; that's an average of nearly three-dozen annually.
