3 Dead After Ambulance Collides With Car In West Michigan

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (AP) - Authorities have identified two people killed when their car collided with an ambulance rushing a 74-year-old man to a nearby hospital. The patient also died.

Police say 61-year-old Shirley Stokes apparently ran a stop sign and flashing red light late Monday when the ambulance and her car collided three blocks from Bronson Battle Creek Hospital.

Shirley Stokes and 54-year-old passenger James Stokes died at the scene.

David Simpson was in the ambulance after suffering an apparent heart attack. Simpson was transferred to another ambulance, but later was pronounced dead at Bronson.

Police say the ambulance's emergency lights and siren were on at the time of the crash. Alcohol and speed may have been factors in the crash.

Authorities say two firefighters and two paramedics sustained minor injuries.
