3-Car Crash Causes Multi-Mile Traffic Backup On I-696

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - At least one motorist was injured in a multi-vehicle accident on I-696 that caused a major traffic jam during one of the busiest times of the day.

The accident happened around 7 a.m. Friday on westbound I-696 between Southfield and Evergreen roads. At least three vehicles were involved.

"We do have one SUV laying on its side and that's getting most of the attention here, from the fire crews and EMS," WWJ's Bill Szumanski reported from above the scene in Chopper 950. "One person is on the ground, on the stretcher. Ahead of that, two other vehicles are nosed into the wall as well. A lot of liquid debris down on the freeway and the skid marks -- looks like all three of these vehicles came across the freeway and hit the left median wall."

At least one person was hurt in the crash, although the severity of their injuries is unknown.

Three lanes were closed on I-696 as police were investigating, causing a traffic backup as far away as Woodward Avenue. All lanes have since reopened.
