22-Year-Old Detroit Man Appears In Court In Fatal Greektown Shooting
DETROIT (WWJ) - A probable cause hearing was held Thursday for a 22-year old Detroit man, charged with a murder in Greektown last month.
Denzel Lee Talbert is accused of fatally shooting 18-year old Martel Taylor in an alley on Monroe Street shortly before midnight on June 21.
Wayne County prosecutors allege Talbert got into a fight with a group of men in Greektown, chased them and fired shots —killing Taylor and wounding a 21-year-old man.
The shooting was one of two in Greektown and two dozen that weekend in Detroit. In the other Greektown case, 17-year-old man was arrested last week in the June 20 non-fatal shooting of an 18-year-old woman.
Police say surveillance video and tips from the public helped identify suspects in both incidents — the rash of violence prompting church leaders to call for more people in the community to ditch a "no snitch" policy long-observed in the city.
Talbert — charged with murder, attempted murder, and felony firearm — will be back in court for a preliminary exam July 23. Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Maria Miller says more details about the incident will be presented at that time.
