21-Year-Old Mt. Clemens Man Faces Felony Charges In Accidental Shooting

MT. CLEMENS (WWJ) - A 21-year-old man is facing multiple charges after authorities say he accidentally shot an acquaintance in the back.

The charges against Lasail Hamilton of Mt. Clemens following the shooting on Monday, Sept. 8, when Macomb County Sheriff's Office responded to the Mt. Clemens High School to investigate a reported shooting.

When deputies arrived at the school, at 155 Cass Ave., they found a 20-year-old man had collapsed in the parking lot.

The victim reported that he'd been driving on Orchard Street in a Pontiac Aztek when Hamilton, who was sitting in the backseat, accidentally discharged a handgun firing a single round.

The round went through the front seat of the vehicle and struck the driver in the back.

The victim, whose name has not been released, said that's when he drove to the school where he got out of the vehicle and found by school security personnel.

Sheriff's officials say Hamilton had already fled the scene before officers arrived.

He turned himself in on Thursday, Sept. 25, and was arraigned  in the 41B District Court of Clinton Township on a charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon (5 years); careless discharge causing injury (2 years); felony firearms (2 years) and failure to stop and render assistance (90 days).

Bond was set at $10,000 cash/surety.

Hamilton is scheduled to appear in court for a hearing on Wednesday, Oct. 8.
