20.4 Inches Of Snow Hits Parts Of Michigan, More On The Way
ALLENDALE, Mich. (AP/WWJ) — Snow is falling across most of Michigan, with more than 20 inches accumulating in places and more on the way through Friday.
The National Weather Service said Wednesday that 20.4 inches of snow fell in Ottawa County near Allendale and 17.2 inches fell in East Grand Rapids.
The snow and high winds have caused numerous crashes statewide.
Among those on the go Wednesday as the result of dozens of accidents were members of the Michigan State Police. Lt. Mike Shaw told WWJ Newsradio 950 that in a four-hour period alone troopers responded to 60 separate accidents in the metro area.
"You have to keep your speeds down, for one," Shaw said. "You never know what you're going to come against and if you're going to fast for the road conditions that's a quick way to go into the side or into the wall. You also have to increase your following distance -- even in normal weather -- and again, I can't harp on it enough, you have to stay off that cell phone, put the Big Mac down and keep your eyes and your mind on the road."
Colder than normal temperatures are expected to hang around for the next few days before a brief warm-up on the weekend.
Seventy-three-year-old Larry Ehrman of Monroeville, Indiana, died Tuesday in a crash on U.S. 23 in Genesee County's Fenton Township.
Suburban Detroit authorities are awaiting autopsy results on a 53-year-old woman found dead in the deep cold outside a Garden City house Tuesday.
Police Chief Robert Muery tells The Detroit News foul play isn't suspected in the death of Tina Crosson. She was identified through a microchip in her dog, which was barking nearby.
