2 Killed, Baby Critically Injured In Thanksgiving Weekend Crashes In Detroit
DETROIT (WWJ) - A three-week old girl remains hospitalized as Michigan State Police release the names of two people killed in a pair of accidents over the holiday weekend in Detroit.
Andre Thurmond, 22, of Livonia, died early Saturday morning in a three-vehicle accident.
Thurmond's car was on the shoulder of I-94 near Van Dyke in Detroit when it was hit, according to police. The driver of the other car ran away from the scene, police said, and open alcohol was found in the car. A third driver involved was arrested for drunken driving.
In an unrelated incident Saturday evening, State Police say 36-year old Dawn Spicer of Detroit died hen her car was rear-ended by a semi truck on I-75 near Goddard. A second adult in the car was injured along with a baby in the back seat.
The infant, identified in TV reports as 27-day-old Elizabeth Meyers, underwent brain surgery Sunday. Doctors said the next 72 hours will be crucial to the baby's recovery, WDIV reported.
She remained in critical condition Monday.
Troopers say the child was not properly restrained in the black 1998 Buick which was slowing or stopped partially blocking the right lane when it was hit.
State police are asking that anyone that witnessed the I-75/Goddard crash or who saw the Buick travelling on I-75 to call Trooper Connor at 734 287-5000.
