5 Hurt In Detroit Ambulance Crash

DETROIT (WWJ) - Two emergency medical technicians were among those injured when an ambulance struck another vehicle and then a utility pole on Detroit's west side.

The accident happened at around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Schaefer Hwy. and McNichols Rd., near DMC Sinai Grace Hospital.

Power lines came down across the vehicle, which had a patient on board at the time of the crash.

Two EMTs and a patient being transported in the ambulance, along with two people in the other car.

One of the EMTs  injured was believed to have a broken wrist, according to officials talking to WWJ's Jon Hewett at the scene. None of the injuries were thought to be life-threatening.

Detroit firefighters and DTE Energy crews were on the scene.

"They've taken what remained of that broken pole, and obviously the light is out at the intersection, and there's going to be some work here in regard to restoration of the electrical — in addition to getting the remnants of this accident off of the street," Hewett reported at 12:30 p.m.

It was not immediately known who was at fault for the crash which remains under investigations.

The intersection was closed to traffic but has since reopened.
