1 Killed When Van Hits Tree, Bursts Into Flames In Warren
WARREN (WWJ) - One person is dead and two others are hospitalized after an accident Monday morning in Warren.
According to police, a driver of a van was speeding on Toepfer, west of Gratiot Ave., crashed into a stopped car, then veered and hit a tree. That's when, police said, the van burst into flames.
The driver of the speeding van died. He or she was not immediately identified by police.
Two people in the stopped car were taken by EMS to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Reporting from the above the scene in Chopper 950, WWJ's Bill Szumanski said Toepfer was shut down by police.
"They have yellow tape across the street here, at Topher and Beechwood, and what they're doing right now is some of them are investigating the site itself, where the van still lies on its side next to the tree," Szumanski said, before 7 a.m. "We did see a couple of officers walking around through the neighborhoods with their flashlights, obviously looking for evidence of some type."
Toepfer has since reopened to traffic.
