1 killed, 6 others injured in early morning shooting in Lansing

LANSING, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) - A teenager was killed and six other people were injured in an early morning shooting in Lansing on Monday.

"I've been living here for five years; I do love living here, but there's some stuff that keeps happening and no one is really doing anything about it," said Gabe Hernandez, a neighbor who lives adjacent to the shooting site.

Lansing police responded at about 2:50 a.m. Monday to a report of a shooting at the 300 block of River Front Drive. When officers arrived, they found a large crowd of people and several shooting victims.

Multiple people were treated at the scene and taken to an area hospital.

A 17-year-old male was pronounced deceased at a hospital. Police say at least one person is in critical condition.

The shooting victims range in age from 15-20 years old.

"I woke up having no idea what's going on," Hernandez said. "I saw 10 to 20 cars, and I can't even walk down anywhere. This morning I see all this crazy stuff, like, is this even real life? It's so surreal, and then no one really does anything about it."

No arrests have been made. Police believe this was an isolated incident.

Lansing Mayor Andy Schor said in a statement to CBS News Detroit that he is thinking of the victims and their families.

"The fact simply remains that access to guns is too easy. These young people should not have had these guns," Schor wrote. "We take hundreds of illegal weapons off the street every year, yet continue to face these tragic incidents. We need more action by the state and federal governments to control access to guns. We will work with all of our law enforcement partners and use all tools at our disposal to find who is responsible for this and make sure they are held accountable. And we will aggressively hold responsible the owner of the guns that were used. Access to and willingness to use a gun is too easy, and we will arrest all parties responsible. This has to stop."

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call Lansing police at 517-483-4600, extension 5, or Crime Stoppers at 517-483-7867.
