1 Killed, 1 Injured In Head-On Crash Along US-127
SUMMIT TWP. (WWJ) - Authorities say one person was killed when their car crashed head-on with another vehicle along US-127 in Jackson County.
Jackson County Undersheriff Christopher Kuhl said the accident happened just before 6 a.m. Friday on US-127 near Hart Road in Summit Township.
"The initial information suggests that this was a head-on traffic crash and there is one fatality as a result," Kuhl told WWJ's Beth Fisher.
The driver of the other vehicle was taken to an area hospital with non life threatening injuries. Identities of those involved have not yet been released.
Other circumstances surrounding the accident weren't immediately clear.
"There are two lanes of traffic and there are sections that have break-out passing lanes," said Kuhl, "We are going to look at all factors involved in this to see if there are any contributing factors."
Kuhl said it's too early to speculate if speed was a factor.
"The speed limit is 55 MPH in that area and obviously, each of the vehicles did sustain significant damage, just because of the nature of the impact and the speeds involved on the roadway," he said.
The freeway is expected to be closed for several hours while police investigate the scene. Motorists are urged to avoid the area.
