Semi-truck driver dead after crash on I-75 in Monroe County
(CBS DETROIT) - A semi-truck driver was killed in a crash early Thursday on I-75 in Monroe County, police said.
The incident happened at about 4 a.m. on I-75 north of South Otter Creek Road in Monroe Township.
Monroe County Central Dispatch received several calls about a crash, with reports saying multiple cars were involved, including one that had caught fire.
A semi-truck was heading southbound on I-75 when it crossed through the center median barrier in a construction zone and then struck three vehicles traveling in the freeway's northbound lanes, according to Michigan State Police.
At this time, police say what caused the semi-truck to cross the median is unknown.
The driver of the semi-truck, identified as a 47-year-old Belleville man, was killed in the crash.
Two occupants in one of the vehicles suffered minor injuries and took themselves to a local hospital. The drivers in the other two vehicles were also injured, but refused to be taken to the hospital.
Crews were not working in the construction zone at the time of the incident.
Both the northbound and southbound lanes were closed as authorities investigated.
