1 dead after Ann Arbor apartment fire
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) - One person was killed in an Ann Arbor apartment fire early Monday, officials said.
Firefighters were called to the Baker Commons Apartments at 106 Packard St. at 2:03 a.m. on Jan. 8, according to Ann Arbor Fire Chief Mike Kennedy.
They encountered a second-floor apartment fire and rescued one woman from the fire unit, who was pronounced dead at the scene. She was the only occupant of the unit where the fire started.
In addition, firefighters performed a ladder rescue to get another resident from the second floor. Ann Arbor police helped evacuate residents.
Fire officials say it was upgraded to a second alarm due to the amount of residents involved, but the fire was quickly extinguished.
According to fire officials, there was some sort of explosion in the unit before the fire started. The units do not have natural gas, and officials say the apartment building's natural gas feed was not involved in this incident.
Fire sprinklers were activated with the alarm system. The fire and explosion were limited to one unit, but officials say eight others sustained smoke and water damage.
The city's housing commission is assisting residents whose apartments are not livable due to the incident.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
No other information has been released at this time.
"Special appreciation to the University of Michigan Logistics, Transportation, and Parking, which provided two buses for displaced residents to stay warm," according to a news release from the Ann Arbor Fire Department. "The Standard at 405 South Main also opened their lobby for displaced residents."
