Shootings Near MSU Campus Leave 2 Dead
EAST LANSING (WWJ/AP) - Two people have been killed in separate shooting near the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing.
A pharmacy employee was shot to death in one of the two shootings Monday afternoon, a second person was shot a short time later and died from their injuries.
The suspect was taken into custody after a standoff with police.
The first shooting occurred just after 11 a.m. Monday in a Rite Aid store at Frandor Shopping Center in Lansing Township, just west of the school.
"The suspect entered the store, made contact with an employee, and shots were fired," Lansing police officer Robert Merritt told local station WLNS.
The victim was a 35-year-old man, Merritt said. The death is being investigated as a homicide.
"Do we think it's random? Do we know what the motive is? No, we don't right now," Merritt added.
The second shooting was reported about 30 minutes later, just about a mile away — on Coolidge Road, northeast of the campus in East Lansing. That person died from injuries related to the shooting.
Merritt said it wasn't immediately known if the shootings were related.
Nearby schools were on lockdown as police are advised people in the neighborhood near the second shooting to lock their doors.
Michigan State issued an alert for students and staff, telling them to avoid the area.
