Denver's first snow of season will remain heavy at times through Sunday morning

The first winter storm of the season for the Front Range will bring significant snowfall and cause major travel headaches through Sunday morning.

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for the Denver and Boulder areas through 12 p.m. on Sunday. Most neighborhoods will experience an additional 3-7 inches of accumulation from Saturday evening through Sunday morning but heavy snow bands could bring as much as 10 inches of total snowfall to some areas. That much snow is mostly likely in the foothills of Jefferson, Boulder, and Larimer which are also under a Winter Storm Warning through Sunday morning including Estes Park, Ward, Genesee, and Conifer.

Farther north, the Fort Collins, Loveland, and Greeley areas will experience less snow overall but could still measure up to 5 inches and travel could still be hazardous.

In high country, as much as 20 inches of snow is possible over the highest peaks and passes. Additional snowfall in the mountains including in Summit County will generally be 5-10 inches through Sunday morning. Travel could be very difficult and very slow along I-70 mountain corridor. 

Elsewhere in Colorado, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the Eastern Plains due to icy roads and a few inches of accumulation in some areas. The same is true in southern Colorado including the Colorado Springs and Pueblo areas.

The snow should be over before the Broncos-Chiefs game starts at 2:25 pm in Denver Sunday, but it will be mostly cloudy and quite chilly for the game. You can watch on CBS Colorado.

Then it will be near record cold in the metro area on Monday morning (the forecast is 8 degrees, the record is 3 degrees from October 30, 2019). A gradual warming trend will start Monday afternoon and will continue through the next of next week. The next chance for any precipitation will wait for at least a week.
