Water Main Break Disrupts Busy Intersection

DENVER (CBS4)- A water main break disrupted traffic at a busy intersection in Denver on Wednesday morning. The break happened at Colorado Boulevard and Interstate 25.

Denver Water posted on social media at around 9 p.m. saying repairs would continue overnight, and all lanes should reopen by 6 a.m. Thursday.

The water main break occurred about 5:40 a.m. Wednesday. The 8-inch main burst and flooded the intersection. Because of frigid temperatures, the water flooding the intersection quickly turned to ice.

Denver Water crews quickly turned off the water and police closed the intersection. The break impacted six businesses in the area, including Zoe's Kitchen, Five Guys,
KFC/A&W, McDonald's, a flooring store, a sheepskin store and a medical marijuana facility.

The closures left many construction workers without a place for lunch.

"It's a bummer, everything seems to be closed today," said Isaac.

He and his buddy Gabriel work at a construction site near the water main break.

"We usually just cross the street and take lunch at McDonald's, but it seems to be closed today," he said.

So, they improvised: Cheetos and hot sauce, and a cup of noodles from the Corner Store. And they weren't the only ones. Kurt also works construction at the site nearby, he wasn't able to grab a quick lunch today at Five Guys like he had hoped.

"Just working and everything's closed," he said.

The managers of Zoe's Kitchen got creative in order to stay open, providing bottled water for customers.

Water was restored to the businesses about seven hours after the break.

Some drivers ignored the closures, blowing past signs and barriers, trying to weave their way around cones and crews.

Drivers are urged to take alternate routes until repairs are complete.
