2 Killed In Deadly Semi Crash At C-470 Between Bowles And Ken Caryl
LITTLETON, Colo. (CBS4) -- A deadly semi fire had initially closed both directions of C-470 between West Bowles Avenue and Ken Caryl Avenue. Eastbound lanes reopened Thursday afternoon and westbound lanes reopened just before 7 p.m. At least two people were killed in the fiery crash.
Five vehicles were involved, according to the Colorado State Patrol. The semi and another vehicle went off the embankment.
The semi was hauling gravel and dirt when it veered through the median an into oncoming traffic. The truck then struck the shoulder barrier and went over the wall onto the bike trail below.
"We are still talking with the witnesses that we have, and those that were involved with it. And then our investigators are looking through all the stuff we have in the roadway. Once we have all that done, we will need to start moving the vehicles that are down there. One, to find out if we have anybody who could've survived, or if there are additional fatalities," said Gary Cutlet with the Colorado State Patrol.
The westbound lanes of C-470 were closed while crews removed and replaced guard rails with temporary barriers. All lanes were reopened just before 7 p.m.
"...please look out for deputies, troopers and firefighters in the road as we work together on this incident on C470," The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office tweeted.
The fire spread to some grass along the highway but was extinguished.
The center median and a wall along the right side of the westbound lanes were damaged.
The bike path will be closed for an undetermined amount of time.
