Train Derailment In Commerce City Doesn't Cause Too Much Damage
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (CBS4) - At least five train cars were impacted in a train derailment in Commerce City on Tuesday.
Copter4 flew over the train that had gone off its tracks near 96th and Interstate 76.
South Adams County Firefighters responded to the train derailment on Tuesday afternoon. Firefighters said there were no leads and no fire. Crews continued to investigate what caused the train to come off its tracks.
CDOT said 96th was closed from Havana to I-76 in both directions. There was no estimate on when the road would be reopened.
No one was injured in the derailment.
Authorities said most of the train cars were empty when they tipped but one car seemed to be carrying a load of what appeared to be pallets of wood that partially spilled on the road. Authorities still didn't take any chances.
"We had to get copies of the manifest to be sure. We don't ever guess about those things. We need to know exactly what the train cars are carrying," Cmdr. Harold Chatman with the Commerce City Police Department said.
The National Transportation Safety Board will be investigating the cause of the crash and then a large crane is going to be brought in to upright the cars and able to move them.
