Train Carrying Dry Ammonia Derails In Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP/CBS4) - Cleanup is underway after seven rail cars carrying dry ammonia fertilizer overturned in downtown Colorado Springs.

About 70 residents were asked to remain indoors following the accident Sunday night.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman Joe Sloan said Monday some of the fertilizer spilled and it's being cleaned up. He said trains are being rerouted on a siding and there is no estimate on when the damaged tracks will be fixed.

"The only other concern would be is if we started to get a lot of it washing down into the drain systems or the nearby Fountain Creek area," Capt. Steve Oswald with the Colorado Springs Fire Department said.

Several rail crossings remain closed.

No one was injured and there were no evacuations. The cause of the derailment in under investigation.
