'They Get Cold Like I Do': Girl, 10, With Rare Condition Adopts Frostbitten Kitten
DENVER (CBS4) - A kitten rescued from the cold has found a new home with kindred company.
Kai was rescued during a cold snap in September after he and his sister, Gerda, were abandoned by their feral mother. He lost his two front paws from frostbite. Gerda suffered some minor injuries.
Despite his handicap, Kai -- or Mr. Darcy, as he's known now -- is in good shape.
"As you can see, his paws do not hinder him," said Lora Conklin, whose family adopted the kitten.
"He's very sweet," her daughter, Miah, 10, said.
But that's not what attracted Miah to Mr. Darcy.
"She said we needed to bring them home because they were just like her," Lora said.
When Mr. Darcy and his sister Gerda were rescued, they had suffered from hypothermia.
"They get cold like I do," Miah said.
She was born with an extremely rare genetic disorder that prevents her body from controlling its own temperature.
"She's gone through so many surgeries and so many different things in her life that she can relate to him," her mother said.
Ever since this furry friend joined the family, Miah and Mr. Darcy have been inseparable.
"He was the best Christmas present yet," Miah said.
