Sheriff 'Concerned' After Larimer County Deputy Accused In Hit & Run In Loveland
LOVELAND, Colo. (CBS4) - A deputy with the Larimer County Sheriff's Office is being accused in a hit-and-run in Loveland.
CBS4 viewer Steven Guardado called in a tip that a driver crashed into his backyard and then fled. Guardado said it happened over the weekend at his home near Knobcone Drive and Garfield Avenue, not far from Horseshoe Lake.
Two fences were damaged in the crash. It appears the driver crashed into one fence and then drove through a backyard and crashed through the second fence.
"I'm pissed, almost hits my family," Guardado said.
Guardado told CBS4 he was in his backyard Sunday evening with his 7-month-old daughter when a driver came crashing through the fence surrounding his home. Guardado said he chased after the driver and tried to confront him, and then noticed what the man was wearing.
"On his left shoulder he had a Larimer County Sheriff's Department badge. He was in uniform, didn't stop, took off," Guardado said.
According to law enforcement, the man behind the wheel was Isaac Nail, 46, a sergeant with the Larimer County Sheriff's Office who lives in the neighborhood. Neighbors told CBS4 Nail was driving his own pickup truck and they saw him speeding through the neighborhood before the crash.
"He didn't stay after he did it," homeowner Mary Roberts said. "(He should have stayed) … especially being a deputy sheriff."
Loveland police responded to the crash and said they issued a summons to Nail. They also said they specifically sent a supervisor to help with their investigation because a law enforcement officer was involved.
Nail has been with the Larimer County Sheriff's Office 20 years. He currently works in the jail and was headed to work when the crash occurred.
Larimer County Sheriff Justin Smith sent out a tweet Monday afternoon that said he's very "concerned, disappointed and upset. That is the only way that I can describe my reaction to these reports."
