Rock Slide In Glenwood Canyon Causes Issues On Interstate 70
GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) - A rock slide caused a major traffic problem on Colorado's Western Slope Tuesday morning. The Colorado Department of Transportation closed Interstate 70 in Glenwood Canyon Tuesday morning at approximately 8 a.m. Eastbound lanes reopened about 10:40 a.m. and one westbound lane was opened at noon.
CDOT says drivers should expect delays into Wednesday morning.
CDOT officials said they don't believe any vehicles were hit by falling rocks, but some drivers were stuck in the canyon for a short time. No one was injured. Officials said some of the rocks were as big as small SUVs.
Eastbound traffic had been stopped at mile marker 116, the Glenwood Springs exit, until 10:40 a.m. when it reopened. Westbound traffic has been stopped at mile marker 133, about four miles west of Dotsero.
Crews with heavy equipment are clearing rock and boulders and a geo-hazard team is accessing the slope where the slide occurred to see if there is a danger of more rocks falling.
There could be more closures in the canyon later on Tuesday as repair work continues.
