2 Detained, Released After BB Gun Located Following Incident At Rangeview High School

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - Police have detained and released two juveniles in connection with a "suspected gun" incident inside Rangeview High School in Aurora. One of the juveniles had a BB gun meant to look like a real firearm.

Police first responded to the school, located at 17599 East Iliff Avenue in Aurora at 11:16 a.m. Friday and the school was placed on lockdown.

The response came after a Snapchat image that police came across which showed a picture of what was believed to be a gun in someone's waistband inside the school. They released the image on Twitter.

More than 70 police officers from Aurora converged on the school. No students were injured.

Just after noon, an officer in the area of South Buckley Road and East Evans Avenue saw a male matching the description of the suspect.

Officers contacted two individuals, one was in possession of a BB gun made to look like a real firearm. Both juvenile males were detailed and transported to the District 3 Police Station where they were interviewed by detectives.

After the interview the males were released to their parents. Criminal charges are pending.

Both are students at Rangeview High School.

Security measures were also put into place at two other other nearby schools during the police action.

Several students who were outside the school when the lockdown was put into place were evacuated to the King Soopers parking lot at the intersection of East Iliff Avenue and South Buckley Road.

I wanted to also praise the Aurora Public School Security Officers who assisted our officers with scene security and access to the buildings. Thank you to Aurora Fire Rescue who responded and staged in the event of injuries to anyone. I appreciate the Rangeview High School staff and the School Resource Officer who quickly brought this to our attention and helped us resolve this situation quickly and safely. I commend my officers who apprehended the suspects and recognized the necessity to quickly capture the ones responsible. Our detectives are hard at work to ensure that this matter will be resolved with the most appropriate outcome," said Nick Metz.
