Poudre River Expected To Drop Near Greeley

GREELEY, Colo. (AP/CBS4) - Water levels near Greeley are expected to recede and drop below flood stage over the coming days.

Some residents have voluntarily evacuated from their homes in northeast Greeley because of flooding from the Poudre River. The waters have flooded some basements and the floors of some homes and businesses.

More than 300 homes and businesses are under the voluntary evacuation order.

"I'm getting more freaked out by the minute, the closer it gets," Greeley resident Jessica Wynne said. "It just keeps coming. The water just keeps getting deeper and deeper."

The water reached just above 9 feet on Tuesday -- over a foot above flood stage -- but the Greeley Tribune reported that the flooding remained concentrated in a few areas.

"We're hoping this is the high water mark and it will recede from here," Lt. Pete Morgan with the Greeley Fire Department said. "Obviously that's a hard guarantee to make."

A city councilman reported catching a 10-pound carp in the driveway of his home, which is surrounded by water.

National Weather Service forecaster Kyle Fredin says high stream flows could continue in Colorado through mid-June as its plentiful snowpack melts.

The South Platte Basin, which includes the Poudre, was listed as being nearly three times its average level as of last week.

During September's flood the water reached 11 feet and forced the evacuation of hundreds of people.
