The victim of the homicide has not been identified but a neighboring business owner told CBS News Colorado that the man died in the parking lot behind the business. Investigators said there is also an indication that the shooting took place inside.

Police have not made any arrests. The jewelry store is located across the street from Stevens Elementary School but police said students were not in any danger.

"We were getting information in real-time, we were getting ready to make calls but we got information that says there's no immediate danger in this area and we felt it was unnecessary to put any school in the area on secure status at the time," said Wheat Ridge Police Dept. spokesman Alex Rose.
