Gas Well Leak Capped, Residents Allowed To Return To Homes
PEETZ, Colo. (CBS4) - Workers mitigated a leaking natural gas well near Peetz Saturday afternoon.
A spokesperson with the East Cheyenne Gas Storage company says the leaking well was "successfully shut-in" at approximately 1 p.m.
Kyle Moulton of the Logan County Office of Emergency Management said residents were notified via Reverse 9-1-1 that roads were being re-opened and they could return to their homes. They had been evacuated since Thursday evening when a safety device failed on the well.
The site is an underground natural gas storage facility,
"Contractors were working on one of 16 wells on the site that are used to inject and withdraw natural gas into and out of the underground storage facility," according to a news release. "A safety device failed and as a result, natural gas from the single affected well began escaping into the atmosphere."
The company's news release said local, state and federal authorities had been notified, including the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, the Colorado Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, and the U.S. National Response Center.
East Cheyenne Gas Storage will reimburse evacuated homeowners for their expenses.
