Outlets Seek To Unseal Planned Parenthood Shooting Documents
DENVER (AP) — Several news organizations are petitioning the Colorado Supreme Court to reverse a judge's order to seal details of the case against Colorado Planned Parenthood shooter Robert Lewis Dear.
The local and national news outlets, including The Associated Press, filed the petition Friday, arguing the public has a constitutional right to monitor the operations of the court system. Specifically, they want access to affidavits involving Dear's arrest and the search of his home.
Judge Gilbert Martinez ruled Dec. 30 that it is too early to unseal the documents, but he will reconsider the issue later.
Prosecutors have charged the 57-year-old Dear with 179 counts of crimes including murder, attempted murder and assault stemming from the Nov. 27 shooting in Colorado Springs that killed three people and wounded nine others.
