Northglenn Officer Shot While Serving Search Warrant, Suspect Killed

NORTHGLENN, Colo. (CBS4)- A Northglenn Police officer was shot Thursday morning while serving a search warrant. The suspect was shot and killed.

The officer was shot just after 10 a.m. while executing a narcotics search warrant at a home near East 109th Place and Muriel Drive in Northglenn.

"Upon entry, the team took fire and returned fire," said Northglenn Police Commander Ron Haralson.

The Northglenn SWAT teams arrived to execute a no-knock narcotics warrant at 10909 E. 109th Place, east of Interstate 25 and a few blocks north of 104th Avenue. When officers entered, the suspect immediately fired at them, striking one officer twice. Officers returned fire, killing the suspect.

The officer was rushed to Denver Health Medical Center with injuries but is in stable condition. Police sources told CBS4 the officer was shot in the arm and the leg. He is expected to survive. The officer has not been identified.

Copter4 flew over the home right after the shooting where there were several police vehicles, including a truck from the Adams County Sheriff's Office and police officers from Thornton.

YouReporter Christie Cameron sent in a picture of the SWAT officers standing in front of the home at 11 a.m., about an hour after the shooting happened.

"There was multiple people throughout the house and eight were taken into custody, five adults and three juveniles," said Haralson.

According to Northglenn police, there were five adults and three juveniles at the home and taken into custody for questioning. The juveniles include two children younger than 10 years of age and a teenager.

It is unclear whether any of the adults will be arrested. The children may be placed into protective custody.

Police cordoned off a large area around the home and on the street in front of the home during their investigation. A large portion of the block was blocked with crime scene tape.

Neighbors told CBS4 the family didn't seem like the type who would have drugs.

"They're really nice people, even his dad is a really nice person. I know from talking to his dad a couple of times that he doesn't seem like the type of person to hurt anybody out of not needing to," said one girl who was friends with a boy who lived in the home.

Other described the family as friendly but also had suspicions about the things they saw outside the home, "Definitely a lot of traffic, a lot of different cars. A lot of people going by really slow, we could tell they were trying to look for something."

Adams County has a team that is investigating the shooting. There are few details about what kinds of drugs were involved in the narcotics investigation that spurred the no-knock raid.

The suspect has not been identified.
