Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche ties Joe Sakic for longest home point streak in franchise history
Forward Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche has just tied Joe Sakic for the longest home point streak in franchise history. He recorded a secondary assist on the game-winning power play goal in the second period Wednesday night's win over the Vegas Golden Knights. He has now registered at least one point in all 23 of the Avs home games this season.
"His game is always at a high level," Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said after the 3-0 win. "It's just now every game he's finding a way to impact the game."
Sakic had a 23 game home points streak in the Avs' 2000-01 season.
Earlier this month MacKinnon was named an All-Star for the seventh straight time.
As Austin Nivison of CBS Sports wrote on Wednesday, Nathan MacKinnon "is playing as well as he has ever played."
"MacKinnon has 12 goals and 18 assists in his last 15 games, and his 66 total points are second only to Nikita Kucherov," Nivison said in the latest CBS Sports NHL Power Rankings posted before Wednesday night's game at Ball Arena in Denver.
MacKinnon joined some formidable company of players who've notched a home points streak of at least 23 games to begin a season. The list also includes Wayne Gretzky (40 straight home games with the Los Angeles Kings in 1988-89, and 23 with Edmonton in 1983-84), Bobby Orr (25 with Boston in 1974-75) and Phil Esposito (23 with Boston in 1973-74), according to NHL Stats.
