Name Of Jefferson County Deputy Killed In Motorcycle Accident Released

ARVADA, Colo. (CBS4) – The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office has released the identity of a deputy who was killed when an SUV collided with his motorcycle Sunday morning.

"Sheriff Ted Mink and the 844 sworn and civilian employees of the sheriff's office continue to mourn the tragic death of Sgt. David Baldwin," Jacki Kelley with the sheriff's office said in a statement.

According to Colorado State Patrol, Baldwin was traveling northbound on Highway 93 near 64th Parkway on his patrol motorcycle around 10 a.m.

"The deputy that lost his life was a integral part of this organization," said Jefferson County Sheriff Ted Mink.

At the same time, investigators say Kenneth Hosch, 83, was driving southbound in his SUV and crossed the double yellow line to pass someone. That's when the SUV hit the deputy head on.

"It's something that could have been prevented," said Trooper Josh Lewis.

Though the deputy was wearing a helmet, he sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Hosch was wearing his seat belt and sustained minor injuries.

"Sgt. Baldwin was a military veteran in the U.S. Air Force as well as a highly decorated 27-year veteran of the agency," Kelley said.

"It takes a special kind of person to take an oath to protect and serve their community, and to constantly place the safety of others above their own," Mink said. "Dave will be remembered for his love of family, his duty to service, and his dedication to this community."

According to Mink, outside of work Baldwin was equally as passionate about the things he loved.

"He was a passionate Broncos fan. It just so happens his birthday is next week on the 5th and he told me 'the best birthday present I could have if the Broncos win the Super Bowl,' " said Mink.

According to Lewis, Colorado State Patrol has taken over the case.

Investigators don't suspect drugs or alcohol as contributing factors in the crash.

Charges are pending against Hosch.

Flags are at half-staff at the sheriff's office as law enforcement officers mourn.

"Regardless of the uniform we wear, the shape of the badge we wear, we're all brothers. We're all out there making sure people are safe," said Lewis.

A memorial fund has been set up to help Baldwin's wife and son.
