Denver Mayor Michael Hancock Takes Oath For 3rd Term

DENVER (CBS4)- Denver Mayor Michael Hancock took the oath of office for a third term. On Monday, he and the recently elected Denver city council members were sworn in at the City and County Building.

He has come a long way from his time as the Denver Broncos mascot. The man from Five Points now begins his ninth year as Mayor of Denver.

"Today we inaugurate a new city government by and for the people of this great city," he told the crowd gathered outside the City and County Building.

Under a blistering sun, the mayor addressed issues from climate change to shielding residents from deportation in Denver.

"We will stand together to shield our residents from any radical and hate filled agenda," he said.

Across the street, some felt the mayor wasn't doing enough for those who need it most. That's where protesters gathered to spread their message.

Diane Thiel of Homeless Out Loud told CBS4's Rick Sallinger, "We are here to talk about housing not warehousing for homeless residents of our city."

The group outlined a plan for the next 100 days to improve the lives for those in Denver without a home. The issue was not ignored by the mayor in his address.

"We will not rest until those who are experiencing homeless can rest with a roof over their heads," he said.

Some protesters started shouting during the proceedings and were removed by police.

Other demonstrators stood with signs on behalf of the city's geese which were being run out of the parks and used as food for the underprivileged.

The Denver City Council's five new members were also sworn in for their term.
