Man Convicted Of Stabbing Girlfriend To Death In Lakewood

GOLDEN, Colo. (AP) — A man accused of stabbing his girlfriend to death in Lakewood has been convicted of second-degree murder.

The Jefferson County District Attorney's Office announced Thursday that 22-year-old Leonard Martinez was found guilty of stabbing 20-year-old Kendra Chavez in the neck Feb. 25, 2015. Jurors handed down their verdict late last week, and Martinez is scheduled to be sentenced July 14.

Police were called after Chavez was attacked and sought help from a neighbor at the Curve Motel.

Chavez's mother testified that just minutes before the stabbing, her daughter had called her and she could tell from her voice that she was afraid.

Prosecutors say Martinez had a history of domestic violence against Chavez, who he had dated off and on since high school.
