Letterman Shows Fondness For Peyton Manning During Final Broadcast

NEW YORK (CBS4) - Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning was among the special guests during David Letterman's final broadcast Wednesday night.

During a star-studded Late Show Top Ten List segment, Barbara Walters, Steve Martin, Julia Lewis-Dreyfuss, Chris Rock and others shared their "Top Ten Things I've Always Wanted To Say To Dave."

Manning appeared at No. 3 on the list, delivering the line "You are to comedy what I am to comedy."

In response, Letterman joked "That doesn't even make any sense."

Then from his desk the host pointed at the Denver quarterback, who has made several appearances on the show over the years, and yelled "Peyton! Omigod!!"

Letterman, who hails from Indiana, became a big fan of Manning during his years with the Indianapolis Colts. Manning has appeared on the show one other time since joining the Broncos in 2012.

For Wednesday's show he wore a snappy blue and orange outfit.

CBS4 Sports dove into the archives in advance of the final Tonight Show and showed a clip of one of Manning's past appearances, plus appearances by Broncos quarterback John Elway, former CU Buffaloes star Chauncey Billups and Broncos running back Terrell Davis.

The clips included Manning and Letterman hurling passes into moving taxis and Elway and Letterman throwing footballs at fitness personality Richard Simmons, who held a hula hoop.

Billups was on the show after his Detroit Pistons won the NBA Championship and Billups gave Letterman a hard time because he knew Letterman was rooting for the Indiana Pacers and not the Pistons.

During his interview with Letterman Davis answered a question about Broncos training camp and agreed he gives it 110 percent during the summer practices. Letterman joked that Davis probably does a lot of loafing at camp. Then Davis came back with, "Actually, I give 120 percent" with a smile.

Stephen Colbert will take over as Late Show host on Sept. 8.
