Legacy High Decides To Play Homecoming Game After Fatal Bus Crash

BROOMFIELD, Colo. (CBS4) - Legacy High School in Broomfield has decided to play their homecoming game scheduled for Friday after a deadly bus crash left three of the football coaches seriously injured.

Authorities continue to investigate the fatal school bus crash that occurred Sunday at Denver International Airport.

The school bus was full of coaches and athletes from Legacy High School's football team.

The school district made the decision with the help of parents, students and football staff. School officials said they looked at the team's physical and mental ability to play after the crash.

Sunday afternoon the Legacy Varsity and JV football teams were leaving DIA on buses after returning from a Friday night game in California. Driver Kari Chopper somehow crashed into a concrete bridge in the passenger pick up area and was killed. Fifteen students were taken to the hospital.

Coaches Wayne Voorhees, Matt Kroupa and Kyle Rider suffered significant injuries, including broken bones, and fractured skulls.

The school district said the students involved are being monitored and evaluated by Legacy High School's athletic trainer. Athletes will not play on Friday without first being cleared by training staff.

Students told CBS4 they are happy the game will go on as planned. The only event canceled is the junior varsity football game.

All homecoming events like the varsity game, dance and parade will continue as scheduled this week.
