Lakewood Police Search For Stolen Credit Card Numbers Suspect

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4)- Police in Lakewood are searching for a man who they believe is using stolen credit card numbers in the Denver metro area. Victims of last fall's Target credit card breach are believed to be part of this fraud.

Police are looking for the man who has used 16 stolen card numbers in Lakewood and police believe he could have access to as many as 30 stolen card numbers in the Denver metro area.

"So far he's victimized 16 cardholders all from Capitol One," said Lakewood Police spokesman Steve Davis. "All of which came from the big Target breach last year."

Investigators are looking for the man captured in Target surveillance where he used the stolen numbers. They believe he used the stolen credit card numbers to buy $9,000 worth of merchandise from different stores including Target, Best Buy, 7-Eleven and Walgreens.

The most recent purchase with stolen credit card numbers was March 14.

Officers believe the thief was putting the stolen numbers on a fake card with the name Steve Locke or Steve S. Locke.

"The theory is he probably purchased these credit card numbers online somewhere. If there are a million compromised someone is selling millions at some point," said Davis.

Some $15,000 in purchases were denied.

"If there's any good news, some of it is being caught," said Davis.

Police said 16 Capitol One card holders reported recent credit card fraud on their accounts. All but one of the credit card holders are residents of Colorado.
