CAUGHT: Juan Ocegueda, Youth Facility Escapee, Captured After Allegedly Stabbing Guard
(CBS4) - A 17-year-old youth facility inmate named Juan Ocegueda has been re-captured in Jefferson County after authorities say he stabbed a guard in Lakeside. It happened Tuesday morning while he was at a dentist's office in the 5800 block of 44th Avenue.
A shelter-in-place was issued for the area by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. The guard suffered multiple stab wounds, but is expected to be okay, the sheriff's office said.
Authorities say he escaped wearing shackles around his ankles, but no handcuffs. He ran out of a back door into a neighborhood on the south side of the dentist's office.
"We saw him. He just ran that way into the alley," said Deonte Webb.
"He was holding something, so I'm guessing it was the knife or something," said Matt Sandoval.
Nearly 100 officers, including a police helicopter, drones and K9s, were at the scene combing the area, searching yard by yard.
Ocegueda was found by a K9 team just before 2 p.m. near 43rd and Eaton. Video from a neighbor shows officers escorting the suspect out of a shed or detached garage.
"He was just laying low in there until either we got tired or he got tired, and fortunately it ended well and no one else was injured," said Steve Davis, Chief of Mountain View Police. "It's a scary situation that luckily ended up in the best possible scenario."
The 17-year-old was incarcerated at the Platte Valley Youth Services Center in Greeley but was in the Denver metro area when the stabbing happened.
"Back in January, he was a suspect in a crime spree that had to do with carjacking, robbery, and some other felony charges, so that's what he was currently in custody for," said Jacki Kelly, a spokeswoman for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. He could now face charges of attempted murder.
Authorities say the knife does not belong to the dentist's office, but it's unclear where it came from.
Ocegueda is currently being held at the Lakeside Police department, but will eventually be transferred to the Jefferson County Jail. He's expected to face additional escape and attempted murder charges, authorities said.
