Police in Colorado capture suspect in fatal shooting at Alamosa hotel

A man suspected in a triple shooting at a hotel in southern Colorado is in custody after an extensive search by authorities on Sunday.

Police captured Henry Corral after they say he fled from the initial crime scene in Alamosa, crashed a vehicle and then ran away and hid.

Corral's arrest took place after a warrant went out for him on charges that he killed one man and injured two others in the shooting, which happened at the Sunset Inn Hotel early on Sunday.

After the shooting, authorities say Corral was involved in a crash and an attempted carjacking. The crash happened about 6 miles outside of the San Luis Valley town on County Road 106. He was traveling on a dirt road at high speed, ran through an intersection, and went airborne into a field, police said.

"I'm not sure how he survived that. It totaled his vehicle," Alamosa Police Chief Duane Oakes said.

Following an escape from the crash scene, a search for him grew, with as many as 80 law enforcement personnel involved, including deputies from the U.S. Marshals Service. He was arrested after a person spotted him and called 911. Oakes said Corral was taken to a hospital for medical treatment before being booked into jail.

So far, the identities of the people who survived the shooting have not been released. One of the two men who survived was described by Oakes as being in critical condition. The condition of the other survivor is unknown.

The deceased was identified by the Alamosa County Coroner's Office as 61-year-old Aurelio Peña Jr. of Hooper, Colo.

Oakes called Corral a "danger to the community" and is glad his department and other agencies "went all in" to catch him.

"I'd like to recognize and thank the tipster for the information they provided that directly led to the arrest of this dangerous fugitive," District of Colorado U.S. Marshal Kirk Taylor said in a statement Monday. "I would also like to thank and recognize the incredible work of all involved Law Enforcement Officers who pursued Corral with limited information, and yet were able to still safely take him into custody."
