Green Party Candidate Stein Sees Opportunity In Colorado

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) - The Green Party's candidate for president is hoping to raise awareness about her campaign in Colorado.

Dr. Jill Stein made appearances in several different locations in the state over the weekend. On Sunday she spoke to supporters and undecided voters in Denver and in Boulder.

According to a recent national CNN poll, 5 percent of voters say they'll vote for Stein. In the same poll, 9 percent of voters said they favor Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson.

"The classic question comes down to a lot of voters have to decide is 'Do I want to potentially throw away a vote on a third party candidate?' Or is this the year that the third party candidates are going to get some percentage of the vote that's going to be meaningful," said Bob Ruet, a voter at one of Stein's events on Sunday who says he's undecided.

Stein says her plans include raising the minimum wage to $15, creating millions of jobs, getting rid of student debt and offering free college education. In her Colorado appearances she made special note of those points to supporters of Democrat Bernie Sanders who might feel swayed by her message now that Sanders is no longer in the race.

"The Democratic party did not deserve you. They were not good enough for you. They did you a favor by liberating you," Stein told a crowd on Sunday.

If elected, Stein says she plans to create 20 million environmentally friendly jobs by investing in public transportation, sustainable agriculture and renewable energy.

Stein says other goals of her campaign are allowing felons the right to vote and working with the DEA to declassify marijuana as a dangerous drug.
