DPD Officer: 'Halt! I Need Your Bicycle!'
DENVER (CBS4) – A Denver police officer commandeered a bicycle to pedal down a fleeing suspect on the Cherry Creek Bike Path. The commandeered bicycle was a loaner itself, part of Denver's B-Cycle bike sharing system.
The ordeal started when the SWAT team tried to take a wanted man into custody during traffic stop at Wazee Street and Speer Blvd.
As police officers pulled the car over, Jose Delgado, 28, who was wanted on multiple felony warrants, bailed out of the vehicle and jumped over a retaining wall leading to the Cherry Creek Bike Path.
As officers gave chase, one of the officers asked to borrow a bicycle from a citizen and was able to pedal the cruiser-style-bike enough to catch up with Delgado.
According to police, when Delgado realized he was surrounded he attempted to jump off a bridge and into the rain swollen creek. But, the officer reached over the railing and held the suspect in place until additional officers could take him into custody.
The officer injured his arm during the arrest. The bicycle was returned to the person who rented it.
