"In March 2011, a woman was walking near Sloan's Lake in the early morning hours when she was approached by a man with a small silver revolver. Newman held the victim at gunpoint and sexually assaulted her before fleeing on foot," Kimbrough said in a statement.

Kimbrough said DNA led to Newman's arrest in October 2015.

"He had been arrested in California, for a misdemeanor, and his DNA was added to the CODIS database."

Newman remains in custody. He's scheduled for sentencing on October 14.
