David Anton Reaches Plea Deal With Prosecutors In Death Of Alexis Bounds
DENVER (CBS4) - A man pleaded guilty on Friday to charges of careless driving resulting in death after Alexis Bounds was killed over the summer while she was riding her bike along Marion Parkway in Denver. David Anton, 51, entered the plea during a Denver District Court hearing in the morning.
Under an agreement with prosecutors, Anton will not have to serve any jail time but will have to complete community service.
Bounds, a wife and mother of two, was killed in July when she was riding her bike and was struck by a dump truck Anton was driving. The case became a rallying point for cyclists for drivers to be more careful around bikes. After her death, cyclists took to the streets in memory of Bounds and others who have lost their lives riding on the streets.
"We are pleased that Mr. Anton has accepted responsibility for his actions and that the cycling community is bringing attention to the need for motorists to be vigilant in watching for cyclists," Denver District Attorney Beth McCann said in a statement.
Bounds' mother Peggy Boardman said her family is still struggling with their loss.
"Her children -- this is the hardest part," Boardman said outside the courtroom. "It's so hard for her 4-year-old. He said he just wants to talk to his mama one more time. 'One more time, can I talk to my mama?' It's just so hard for him to understand."
Boardman said Bounds' youngest boy also misses his mother, saying "He calls for his mother every day."
Anton's attorney Rhidian Orr told Bounds' family in the courtroom his client is very sorry for what happened and he and his whole family are devastated.
"Mr. Anton is very sorry and wishes that there had been a chance to stop (the vehicle) and see her," Orr said.
Anton's sentencing hearing is scheduled for Jan. 24.
