CU Boulder Researchers Set Record For Keeping Time

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) - The Denver Broncos aren't the only ones setting records in Colorado. A group of researchers at the University of Colorado in Boulder has set a record for keeping time.

The school's strontium atomic clock has set the new world record for precision and stability. That makes it the most accurate clock in the world. GPS on phones are already using atomic clock time.

"You have a whole bunch of satellites orbiting the Earth, and each has a bunch of atomic clocks. By listening to a whole bunch of these clocks at once, it can pinpoint where you are on Earth," CU grad student Ben Bloom said.

Researchers say the atomic clock will not lose or gain even a second of time for the next five billion years.
