Crews Begin Demolition Of Civic Center Station

DENVER (CBS4)- One of the busiest bus stops in Denver is closed for the next year as major renovations get underway.

Crews started demolishing the Civic Center Station at the end of the 16th Street Mall, starting with the iconic sign.

The station has been the same for the past 30 years and RTD says it's past due for a makeover.

Over the next year crews will rebuild the location to create a cleaner, bigger and more functional bus stop.

RTD says it's designed to look a lot like Union Station with a lot of glass and open structures. The design is expected to make the station safer and welcoming for travelers.

"The plaza area that now is elevated that we're standing on, this whole portion of the project will be demolished and taken down to street grade so the whole area will be opened up and it will have a very open and spacious feel, easy to see in and out of and I think it's going to be a great development for this end of the mall," said RTD CEO & General Manager David Genova.

The remodel also means some changes to bus stops and routes.

During the closure, bus routes from Civic Center Station will be assigned temporary bus gates along Broadway and Lincoln Street.
