1 Killed, 6 Hospitalized In House Fire In Southwest Denver
DENVER (CBS4) - Firefighters battled a house fire in southwest Denver Tuesday evening that claimed the life of one person and sent six others to the hospital.
The fire on West Stanford Avenue, which is near the intersection of West Quincy Avenue and South Kipling Street, broke out just after 7 p.m.
According to officials, three neighbors attempted to rescue people inside the burning home and were injured outside. Four people were initially in the home -- three were injured, including one who jumped out of a window, and a 49-year-old man died.
All six of the injured people were transported to the hospital. The extent of their injuries is not known. One of those hospitalized is reported to be a young girl.
According to the family, the man who died had muscular distrophy and was bound to a wheelchair. He was trapped with two others but the other two people were rescued.
At one point crews lost contact with a firefighter but he was later located and safe. The fire was so hot that firefighters could not stay inside long.
One firefighter suffered minor injuries fighting the fire but was treated at the scene.
The fire started in the basement and the cause is under investigation.
