Wrong-Way Crash Shuts Down Southbound I-225 From 6th Avenue To Iliff
AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) -- A wrong-way crash involving at two vehicles shut down the southbound lanes of Interstate 225 at Iliff Avenue Tuesday afternoon. Police say both drivers involved in the crash is expected to survive.
Police told CBS4 that the driver of the FJ Cruiser, the white SUV, was traveling the wrong way on I-225. That's when the white SUV struck the maroon SUV.
The driver of the FJ suffered a hip injury. The investigation into the crash and which charges will be filed continued on Tuesday afternoon.
The crash was first reported a little before 1 p.m. All southbound lanes from 6th Avenue to Iliff Avenue were closed until just before 5 p.m. Tuesday.
CDOT continue to urge drivers to avoid I-225 southbound altogether. Traffic was diverted off the interstate at 6th Avenue.
"Due to the lower capacity level of the secondary roads and side streets in the area, CDOT and the Aurora Police Department recommend drivers take an alternate route home and avoid southbound I-225 for the evening rush hour," they said.
"Stay out of area. Extended traffic delays," the Aurora Police Department tweeted about 1:30 p.m. Police said all exits along I-225 will experience delays.
Police advised using East Mississippi Avenue to exit the interstate.
There was no estimate for when the lanes would reopen.
