Community Laces Up For 5k Walk/Run To Help Bigelow Family
WESTMINSTER, Colo. (CBS4) - Friends of the Bigelow family came together on Sunday to participate in a 5k walk/run fundraiser. More than 500 people braved the cold and rain to run and raise money.
The family was targeted in a suspected road rage shooting in June. Vaughn Bigelow Jr., 13, was killed. His mother and brother and another man were wounded in the shooting outside a dentist's office.
The suspect, Jeremy Webster, faces first-degree murder and multiple counts of attempted first-degree murder.
"Tragedy stuck a fellow Lifetime member and this seemed like an easy and great way to support the family during their efforts to heal," said one runner.
The community has rallied for the family in the subsequent weeks with a blood drive. All funds raised will go straight to the family.
Ashley Wilkinson organized the event. She says an additional 250 people were running for the Bigelows from locations around the world.
"People were just looking for ways to help and they were wanting ways to help and we just so grateful everyone showed up today," Wilkinson said.

Others who know the family say the turnout wasn't surprising.
"This was a wonderful turn out, and I'm glad that we did it and our hearts and prayers go out to the Bigelow family," said Holly Keith.
"I'm not surprised. Broomfield... this community is amazing. It's a great day, the rain feels good, you know it's just a very positive day," said Teag Casey.
Vanessa McCracken says events like this bring the community closer together and hopes the Bigelow family continues to feel that support as they heal.
"Praying for them, wishing them the best and hope they get back to us soon."
